Tonight it's true
This is one of the small handful of solo songs I'd already written when I moved to Sheffield; in fact it debuted at my first ever solo gig at the Jug of Ale in Birmingham in December 2002 (I didn't play again for about a year after it). I was spending a lot of time on trains and coaches between the two cities and it was kind of a heady time, and not really in a healthy way. But it had its good aspects and it all worked out OK in the end, like the song, which came to me in a flash on a National Express on the way home from Manchester one Sunday.
If there were words to summarise
the little sparkle in your eyes
when the DJ played your song,
I'd write them down and pass them on
and the Terrorists would stop
and the World would know what Pop
means, and you and me,
we could smile again
Cos when I watched you dance tonight,
I rediscovered something right
down, where I'm never strong enough
when the Government gets tough
cos there's a lot left to be done
stopping wars and having fun
yeah, you and me,
we
know what counts
And I'm too scared just to make a sound
watching you sleep the night around
All I want is another hour with you
Before my confidence just slips
may I compliment your hips?
and when tomorrow lifts its head
why can't we spend the day in bed?
Let's get away to somewhere new
the underground is calling you
yeah, you and me
can do what we please
And I'm too scared just to make a sound
watching you sleep the night around
All I want is another hour with you
So can I see you again in the summertime?
and we can make everything alright
Drinking vodka in the rain
on an overcrowded train
yeah, all I need
are scenes like these
And I'm too scared just to make a sound
watching you sleep the night around
All I want is another hour with you
So stick with me and we'll be alright
I can be quite fun when I'm not uptight
and Love can be a lie but tonight it's true
yeah tonight it's true.
